Five ways to wear one pair of navy jeans

The most useful thing in the shop is also the hardest to photograph. Here is what it actually does all week.

Monday: with a white tee and white shoes

The default, and the reason indigo earns its place. Keep the hem breaking once on the shoe and the whole outfit reads as considered rather than accidental.

Tuesday: under an overshirt

Navy on navy works when the textures disagree. A brushed overshirt against a smooth denim gives you depth without a pattern anywhere in sight.

Wednesday: with a collared shirt, untucked

Untucked only works if the shirt ends within a hand-width of the trouser fly. Ours are cut to do that; most are not, which is why untucked has a reputation.

Thursday: with a fine-gauge sweater

Merino over a collar, sleeves pushed once. This is the outfit that survives an office, a train and dinner without any part of it being changed.

Friday: with the shorts still in the drawer

Rolled once at the ankle, loafers with no socks. The roll should be shallow (two fingers, not four) or it reads as a mistake you decided to keep.
