We started with one shirt and a stubborn idea
Canvas began in 2013 in a single room above a San Francisco framing shop, with one oxford shirt, a borrowed sewing machine and the conviction that good clothes should not need a season to justify their price.
Twelve years later we cut menswear, womenswear and sportswear in the same room we started in, alongside two stores and a workshop that repairs anything we have ever sold. The catalogue is deliberately small: roughly sixty styles a year, each one carried until it stops selling rather than until the calendar says so.
What has not changed is the standard. If a garment will not survive a decade of laundry, it does not go on the rail.
What we hold ourselves to
Four commitments, printed on the back of every delivery note since 2016.
Cut and sewn to last
Every style is graded across nine sizes and stitched at 12 stitches per inch, so seams hold their shape through hundreds of washes.
A short supply chain
We buy from four mills and three makers. Each one is audited yearly for pay, hours and safety, and we publish the results.
Wear it, mend it, return it
Free repairs for two years on anything we make. When a piece is truly finished, send it back and we recycle the fibre.
One honest price
No seasonal mark-up, no invented discounts. The price on the tag is the price we costed it at.
Where the clothes come from
Our cotton is grown and spun in Portugal, our denim woven in Japan and our knitwear finished in a family mill outside Porto that has been running since 1974. Nothing is bought through a broker, which means we can name every person who touches a garment before you do.
Twice a year we publish the full list (mill, maker, town and audit date) on the delivery note that ships with your order.
