Shanghai restaurants for the discerning diner
Shanghai eats at every altitude. Begin at street level: the lane-house stalls of the old French Concession steam their first baskets of soup dumplings before seven, and the queue is the recommendation.
At the other end of the day, the Bund’s dining rooms turn dinner into theatre, pairing river views with tasting menus that walk from Jiangnan classics to modern Shanghainese.
Between the two sit the wet-market noodle counters, the crab houses of autumn and the tea houses where dessert is a ceremony. Book the towers, queue for the lanes, and leave one meal to luck.
