Living With Clay: Care, Repair and the Marks of Use

Clay is meant to be used. Here is how to look after a piece so that it ages well instead of simply wearing out.

Everything we make is food safe and dishwasher safe, but a piece washed by hand keeps its glaze brighter for longer, because a dishwasher cycle is harsher than any meal.

Unglazed exteriors darken with handling. That is the point: the oils from your hands are what give an unglazed jar its depth after a year or two. Keep it away from cooking oil, which darkens unevenly.

A chipped rim can be ground smooth with a diamond pad. A crack through the wall cannot be repaired invisibly, and we would rather replace the piece than pretend otherwise, so every order carries a two-year making guarantee.

Do not put a glazed piece on a direct flame or in a microwave if it carries a metallic glaze. Everything else we make is happy to go from the fridge to the table and back.
