Where Our Clay Comes From, and Why That Changes the Colour

We buy from three pits, and each one gives a different body. Knowing which is which is half of designing a collection.

The pale body in our cup sets comes from a kaolin-rich seam that fires almost white. It is fine grained, throws thin and takes a soft matte glaze without crazing.

The brown body is iron bearing. It fires to a warm mid brown at stoneware temperature and keeps a slight tooth in the surface, which is why we usually leave it unglazed on the outside.

The third is a blend we mix ourselves for the larger display pieces, because a jar thrown in two sections needs a body that stays workable long enough to join without a visible seam.

Clay is a geological product, so a seam changes over the years. When it does, the colour of a collection changes with it, and we would rather tell you that than dye the clay to hold a swatch.
