How a claim is actually assessed, step by step

Loss adjuster assessing a claim on site

From the outside a claim feels like a decision somebody makes about you. From the inside it is a sequence of checks, each of which either passes or asks you a question.

The sequence

  • Validation: is the policy live and the event covered
  • Evidence: photographs, receipts, reports, statements
  • Assessment: a figure agreed with a loss adjuster
  • Settlement: repair, replacement or payment

Delays almost always happen at step two, and almost always because a document is missing. Send everything you have at the start, even the parts that feel irrelevant.

Sending everything up front is the tip. My claim stalled three weeks over one missing receipt.
