Escape of water is the claim nobody expects
Ask any home insurer which claim they see most and the answer is water: a failed washing-machine hose, a slow leak under a bath, a pipe that gives up during the first hard frost of the year.
The damage is rarely dramatic on the day. It is the three weeks of drying, the lifted floor and the replastering that make it expensive, and that is the part a cheap policy quietly limits.
Three checks worth doing this month
- Replace braided appliance hoses older than five years
- Find and label the mains stopcock
- Insulate any pipework in a loft or unheated garage
None of them takes an afternoon and all three sit well above the average excess in value.
