Reading the small print on travel medical cover

Traveller checking policy documents before a flight

A policy advertising ten million in medical cover sounds generous until you read which activities are excluded, how pre-existing conditions are handled, and whether repatriation is included or sold separately.

The four clauses that matter

  • Pre-existing conditions and the declaration window
  • Repatriation and whether a companion is covered
  • Activity exclusions, including hired mopeds
  • Alcohol clauses and what counts as reasonable care

Declare everything, even the condition you consider resolved. An undeclared condition is the single most common reason a travel medical claim is refused, and it is entirely avoidable.
