Finding a compelling subject is half the craft of great photography. From reading natural light to spotting overlooked details and building trust with people on camera, here are ten practical ways to discover frames worth capturing on every single shoot.

Start with the light and let it lead you to the subject rather than the other way round. Walk the same street twice, once looking up and once looking down. Ask permission early and keep talking while you work.

Most of all, stay long after you think you have the shot. The ninth of our ten rules is the one that has earned us the most footage: the best moment usually happens two minutes after everybody assumes the filming has stopped.
