Why Your Site Feels Slow (Even Though It Is Fast)

Every dashboard says the site is fast. Time to first byte is excellent, the Lighthouse score is green, and yet people keep describing it as sluggish. This is not a contradiction. It is a measurement problem.

What a visitor experiences is not the moment bytes arrive; it is the moment the page stops moving. A layout that reflows twice while fonts swap in feels slower than one that paints once and settles, even when the second is objectively later. We have watched people abandon pages that scored better than the ones they stayed on.

The fix is unglamorous. Reserve space for anything that loads late. Ship the font that matters first and accept the one that does not. Stop animating things that have no reason to move. None of this shows up as a headline number, which is precisely why it gets skipped.
