Designing Icon Systems That Age Well
An icon set is the longest-lived asset most brands own. Campaigns rotate, sites get rebuilt, but the little glyph in the tab bar survives every redesign. That longevity changes how we draw.
Draw the grid before the glyphs
We start every set with a construction grid (stroke weight, corner radius, optical padding) and test it on the five hardest concepts in the brief. If the grid survives those, the remaining icons draw themselves.
The second rule is restraint with metaphors. A cloud means weather this year and storage the next; a plain arrow means the same thing forever. When a metaphor is unavoidable, we anchor it to the client’s own product language.
