Urban Geometry

Post war civic architecture photographed as pure form, with every horizon, sign and passer by removed from the frame.

These buildings were designed to be read at a glance from a moving car. Photographed straight on and stripped of context, they become something else entirely: diagrams of the confidence of the decade that built them.

Removing the horizon

Every frame is made from a fixed height with the camera parallel to the facade, so the verticals stay vertical and the eye has nowhere to rest. The absence of a horizon is the whole argument of the series.

Twelve buildings were photographed in Chicago and nine in Rotterdam. Four have since been demolished.
