Unseen Cities

A long form documentary project on the parts of six cities that appear in no guidebook and on no postcard.

The brief I set myself was simple and difficult: photograph only what a resident would walk past without looking. Service yards, transformer stations, the backs of buildings that face other backs of buildings.

The city nobody photographs

It took two years and a great deal of asking permission. Roughly a third of the work was made in the twenty minutes either side of dawn, when these places are lit but still empty.

A selection ran across eight pages of a Sunday magazine, and the full edit is being prepared as a book.
