Into the Mist

A landscape series made across four winters in the Cascade Range, photographed only in the hour when fog sits on the treeline and the world loses its edges.

The mountains here disappear for most of the year. I began returning each February with one camera and a fixed lens, waiting out weather that refused to lift, learning that the pictures I wanted were the ones I could barely see.

Waiting as method

Nothing in this series was found quickly. Some frames took three seasons to arrive, and several places I walked to twenty times gave nothing at all. Patience is not a virtue in this work so much as a technique, the only one that reliably produces the picture.

Fog is the most honest light there is. It removes everything you were relying on and leaves you with shape.

The final edit runs to twenty eight images, sequenced as a single walk from valley floor to ridge. It was first shown at the Aperture Foundation and later published as a limited run of two hundred copies.
