Start where the infrastructure does the work

Japan tops most first-timer lists for a reason: signage in English, trains that make planning trivial, and a level of everyday safety that lets you walk back to a guesthouse at midnight without a second thought.

Vietnam and Thailand offer the opposite trade, more improvisation, far lower costs, and a backpacker circuit dense enough that you are never more than a day from company if you want it.

Wherever you start, book the first three nights and leave the rest open. Solo trips get better the moment the itinerary stops being a contract.
