A five-minute morning ritual that actually fits a weekday

Most morning routines fail for a boring reason: they are too long to survive a bad night of sleep. This one is three steps and takes five minutes, which is short enough to keep doing on the days you do not feel like it.

Step one: cleanse, gently

Wet your face with lukewarm water, work a pea-sized amount of gel cleanser over your skin for thirty seconds, and rinse. Hot water and vigorous scrubbing both cost you barrier lipids you will spend the rest of the day trying to replace.

Step two: serum, on damp skin

Do not dry your face. Press two or three drops of the brightening serum into skin that is still visibly damp, and give it thirty seconds to absorb before you move on. This single detail does more for the result than the choice of serum.

Step three: seal it

A pea of day cream, pressed rather than rubbed, from the centre of the face outwards. If you are going outside, this is also the point at which sunscreen goes on, and no botanical in any bottle is a substitute for it.

The habit that matters most

Do the same three steps tomorrow. Consistency beats every ingredient list ever printed, and the only routine that works is the one you can repeat when you are tired.
