Not to borrow from them, but to be reminded what honesty on the page actually sounds like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first taught me that a narrator may be gentle and still tell the truth. The second taught me to distrust my own best lines, which are almost always the ones performing rather than saying. The third taught me structure: that a novel is a promise made in the first twenty pages and kept in the last twenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A novel is a promise made in the first twenty pages and kept in the last twenty. Everything between is your argument that the promise was worth making.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth taught me about restraint, and the fifth, which I will not name because I steal from it shamelessly, taught me that a reader forgives almost anything except being condescended to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these are the books I would recommend at a dinner party.
