If you want a marriage on the page to feel true, the first thing to give up is the big conversation in which everything is finally said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In twenty years together, people develop a shorthand so efficient it is nearly invisible. A repeated joke carries an apology. A cup of tea placed on the right side of the desk is a whole paragraph. My job as a novelist is to teach the reader that private language early, so that later I can break the reader\u2019s heart with a cup of tea placed on the wrong side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Teach the reader the private language early, so that later you can break their heart with a cup of tea placed on the wrong side of the desk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second thing to give up is symmetry. Nobody loves at the same volume for the same twenty years. Somebody is always further ahead or further behind, and the interesting book lives in that gap rather than in infidelity or catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write the ordinary mornings.
