Three things decide whether a shirt is still good in ten years.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mt-4 mb-3\">Staple length<\/h3>\n<p>Cotton is sold by the length of its individual fibres. Short-staple cotton makes a yarn with thousands of loose ends, and every loose end is a pill waiting to happen. We buy extra-long staple, which is dearer per kilo and cheaper per year of wear.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mt-4 mb-3\">Combed, not carded<\/h3>\n<p>Combing removes the shortest fibres before spinning, around fifteen per cent of the weight, thrown away on purpose. What is left spins smoother, dyes more evenly and keeps its colour through far more washes.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mt-4 mb-3\">The mill matters as much as the fibre<\/h3>\n<p>Our cotton is spun and woven at a family mill outside Porto that has been running since 1974. We can telephone the person who set the loom.
