We started at the other end: a steel frame rated for a 140 kilogram rider plus luggage, then worked out what motor and battery it needed rather than the other way round.<\/p><p>The battery swaps without tools, which matters more than range figures suggest. A commuter with two batteries never waits for a charge; they carry a spare in a pannier and swap it at their desk. Sixty miles on one cell becomes a hundred and twenty on two.<\/p><p>We chose a belt rather than a chain because the single most common reason an e-bike ends up in a shed is drivetrain maintenance.
