Every bulb we tested phoned a server somewhere to change colour, which meant an outage left us with an expensive lamp we could not turn on.<\/p><p>Ours does the thinking in the bulb. Colour, scheduling and beat detection all run locally, and the app talks to the light directly over Bluetooth. There is no account to create and no server to depend on. If your router dies, your lights carry on.<\/p><p>The beat detection was the hard part. Rather than a microphone, which picks up conversation and traffic, the bulb reads the audio envelope from whatever is playing on the paired device.
