Ask them where it actually started and, if they are honest, they will point at week one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A brief that says what to build is a specification. A brief that says what has to become true is a project. The difference matters because the first invites argument about features and the second invites argument about outcomes, and only one of those arguments is worth having.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now spend the first fortnight of every engagement writing the brief with the client rather than receiving it from them. It is the least billable and most valuable thing we do. Half the time it changes what gets built. Occasionally it establishes that nothing should be built at all, which is an uncomfortable but genuinely good result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything after that is execution.
